Language and thinking development of children

Language development for young children, is an important factor for their development, because of language and thought have a close connection. In order to understand the meaning of the language, Brewer (2007: 268) defines the language is a system of communication used by humans. Including from the territory of language products is one verbal saying and signal, and includes present something in a paper format. So that language

becomes the very basic needs to interact with others. Without a tool named the language, then people certainly have difficulties in social interaction process. "... then we can understand the language ability to identify some indicators include: number of vocabulary words (vocabulary), type, structure and sentence form, fill of contained; picture or painting, form movements ... something that is expressive. " (Nurihsan, 2007: 142).

 

The development of the language certainly something that can be measured in this sense, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In preschool children vocabulary is growing rapidly in accordance with the treatment and experience. Children who are born in environment that is enough availability affects language development it is possible language skills will develop well, otherwise the child who grew up in poor neighborhoods will be the means of language is also not ruled out going slow language development. Likewise, treatment of parents who stimulate children's language development, it will most likely be more supportive of the language of children than parents who did not so attention and provide treatment that could affect the development of child language.

Associated with language ability, Vygotsky (Wortham, 2006: 212-213): "Vygotsky (1967) Also Agreed That language and thought are related in the child's acquisition of language, however, he proposed That language precedes thought". In the context of this statement, Vygotsky placed the importance of language, because language is related to the child's ability in thinking, however, Vygotsky placed that thought precedes language to another. Although initially between thought and language are seated in the same position, but the language is a prerequisite for acquiring of knowledge early in others (tool of mind). So language is a tool to gain more understanding. Without language, or language development that slow, it is likely that humans also will be late and hard to develop his thinking, one of which caused difficulties process of communication that resulted in others delay in acquisition of knowledge. In accordance with this opinion, very important role of adults to help children language acquisition. Through interaction with adults, children will understand use and role of language, verbal conversations with adults increase ability of thinking and understanding. With support of adults, children will be motivated to acquire and develop communication skills that will automatically result in the development of language.

Accordingly with the above opinions about the importance of attention development of language for early childhood, Armstrong (1995) argued:
"Language is an Important Part of your pre-schooler's life. Without language, Unable to Communicate she'd be her needs, wants and desires to the outside world. Language Itself development represents an Important pre-requisite to other Important skills to later academic success, Such as reading ".



The development of language related to cognitive development, that means the factor of intellect / cognition affect the the development of language skills. Jean Piaget studied development of language and way of thinking the children, he took a sample of 20 children, they were told to play and talking freely, while Piaget researching and recording what was done to these children. Furthermore, Piaget classifying of 1,000 conversations from children aged between 3-6 and 7 years. From the research conversation he concluded that there are two types of language used by these children: (1) egocentric language, namely the form of language that further highlight the desire and will of a person. Example as an explanation: the child caught a conversation, then the conversation was repeated to himself. While playing he say something he was doing, but he did not show the conversation to others. he talked to other people, conversations that never actually happened, (2) social language, namely the form of language that is used to relate to others. It is also used to exchange ideas and to influence others. Form of language used is information, criticism, requests, and questions. Before children are ready to speak so he isn't ready egocentric social language.

According Vigotsky (Moeslichaton, 2004) there are three stages of speech development of children that determines the level of language developments of children:

  1. an external phase, which means that the source of thinking of children coming from outside himself, the source was mainly coming from adults that provide guidance to the child. This means that there is that deliberate form of treatment to influence the development of language of children. For example, adults ask children "what are you doing?" the boy replied "playing cat", then added a question by adults "where his tail?" and so on.
  2. egocentric stage, where the adult conversation is no longer a requirement, a child who speaks in the way of thinking, so this is in line above to factor in cognitive development of language. For example, the children commented on the dolly, this brother and this is his mouth,
  3. an internal phase, here the kids appreciate all the thoughts that caused road experiences (experiences) from ever experienced. For example, the child spoke: " will I write? I will write the letter A "and etc.. So the problem above when viewed from the aspect of child development of language stage the possibility that the child is experiencing delays in language development, due to no attention and treatment of adults that can add relationships increase children's language.

How important attention development of language, Nurihsan (2007: 141) argued that language ability distinguishes human beings animals, with language, human can be perform the following actions:

  1. codify, record and store various results of observation experience (observation) in the form of an impression, and response (perception), information, facts and data, concept or understanding (concept and ideas), the proposition or rule or law (principle) to the form of science (body of knowledge) and systems of values ??(value system).
  2. transform and process the various forms of the above information through a process of thinking and using the rules of logic (differentiation, association, or the proportion of comparison, causality, prediction, conclusion, generalization, interpretation and inference) context of solving problems (problem solving) and search, creation and discover new things.
  3. To coordinate and express the ideals, attitudes, assessment, and appreciation (ethical, aesthetic economic, social, political, religious and cultural).
  4. Communicate (store and receive) a variety of information, ideas, opinions, attitudes and judgments, aspirations, will and plans to others.

Sunuyeko (2003) argues that language ability to distinguish human beings animal beings. Relation opinions of the how important the human language ability, that macro-scale and long-term have a strategic role of various dimensions life. Traffic actualization of a person's language is not limited to Traffic use of language, speaking, reading and writing. But far through these boundaries include determining ability humans to the realm of political, social, economic, religious, and culture. The role of language included in various dimensions. Many occur around us that sometimes a group, or nation, lifted his dignity as supported by the language that high value, so that have a more value than groups or other nations. One example, Who has not heard of the British empire? Or anyone that does not hear the Arabic? and etc. All this because one of the factors supported by language that high value, namely the composition and level of depth of language itself.
