Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a study initiated by Mark Baldwin and developed by Piaget. The form of this learning model is to emphasize the knowledge acquired by students, based on the reality of life in everyday environments. Acquisition of knowledge is not limited to information provided by teachers, but students are given the freedom to read real life and adjust to the learning materials.
There are seven essential components in implementing the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL):
- Constructivism; develop knowledge in the cognitive process of students based on the experience of life in the neighborhood
- Inquiry; knowledge gained in learning Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is based on the process of discovery and search students
- Questioning; the process of question and answer between teacher and students reflect the existence of feedback between students' knowledge and curiosity of students to acquire knowledge
- Modeling; acquisition of knowledge can be obtained through the figures, for example, in certain cases, teachers can bring in an expert and interested students to demonstrate an activity.
- learning community; acquisition of knowledge was obtained through interaction with others, this theory departs from the idea of a Russian psychologist Vygotsky
- Reflecting; that the knowledge acquired, and in descending again remember these events, in Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) activity is critical reflection, the teacher gives students the opportunity to reflect and remember the events and express their experiences
- Authentic Assessment; should teachers to assess learning outcomes in Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) with a real assessment, conducted through direct observation of events in class, but not only through an assessment by written tests
